HANGZAVART

HANGZAVART? is a non-academic music academy where musicians of countless stylistic and institutional backgrounds gather to exchange knowledge, experiment and develop rapport. HANGZAVART? and its participants aim to find paths to create an alternative music education that can respond to the musical, aesthetic, educational and social challenges of our era in a more flexible manner than formal music institutions can.

In 2023, we focused on the question of autonomy—whether artistic self-governance is a viable pursuit today and, if so, what methods and challenges it entails. This topic was inspired by concerns about artistic authenticity in an era overly controlled by the materialist forces of consumption and production. These forces are steadily reshaping even the most powerful traditional cultural institutions. Resistance attempts from the 20th century, spanning the avant-garde to various DIY movements, have also lost momentum, transforming into brands or trophies. Consequently, withdrawing to the underground may not be a desirable option either.

To investigate the topic, we invited 24 musicians and composers from Hungary, Romania and Serbia for 9 days to co-create.
